Ulster Karate Association was formed in 1981. It teaches traditional Wadoryu and competes in championships. Wadoryu is by far the largest style practiced in Northern Ireland with many different associations and clubs. Ulster Karate Association works with many of these associations on a national basis and is in membership of international bodies.

Sensei Terry Boyle 6th Dan started karate in 1974 in the Irish Karate Federation (IKF) under Sensei George Canning of Dublin. When Sensei Canning began to introduce another style of karate Ulster Karate Association decided to continue training in Wadoryu, left the IKF and formed its own association organising training seminars with top instructors including Hanshi Tatsuo Suzuki.

Ulster Karate Association was a founder member of the Northern Ireland Karate Board, the Ulster Karate Council and Karate Northern Ireland. Sensei Boyle has held many offices within these organisations and has been Chairman of all of them for many years. Today UKA has clubs in Belfast, Antrim, Greenisland and Dromore (with previous clubs in Derry, Ballybofey and Larne) and has a regular training membership of some 150. It also has a number of associate clubs.

Ulster Karate Association (UKA) was accepted into membership of Federation of Wado Kai Europe (FEW) following an application and presentation in 2015 and competitive attendance at the European Championships in Switzerland in November 2016.
Sensei Boyle successfully completed the 1st FWE Referee Qualification Examinations for Kumite & Kata.
